We got a call in January from our friend Holly Chapple with exciting news about a workshop and styled shoot she was planning at her farm, Hope Flower Farm in May. She followed by saying she had a spot for us to come shadow the incredible Abby Jiu Photography and former Martha Stewart Weddings Editor, Shira Savada. We were in a bit of shock, because if you know anything about Holly’s workshops, it’s that they’re always paired with whimsical floral installations you see in magazines. This styled shoot was definitely going to be the largest scale shoot we’ve been able to shoot, so we were so excited for what she had in store.
This workshop brought 15 floral designers to Virginia and was inspired by the peony fields Holly had growing on the farm. Living in Texas means we rarely ever see peonies unless they’re in an arrangement or at the grocery store. Getting to walk the peony field as the sun set was definitely a highlight of the trip. The workshop included a session on getting published, and Abby and Lisa spoke about their experiencing capturing high-end weddings in the Washington DC market. They’ve covered the magazines and blogs of some of the most prestigious wedding publications in the world. We loved getting to hear their tips, tricks, and advice on how to book your ideal client.
Shira also presented her wealth of knowledge from the perspective of a real weddings editor at Martha Stewart. She let us know what they look for, how the process works, and how to pick the best photos from the wedding that summarize the entire day perfectly. Sometimes you’re only allowed 15 images from a wedding in a publication, so it can be tough to tell an entire story though a limited number of images. One thing we learned was that Martha Stewart only accepts real weddings. It was a breath of fresh air to know that they are so dedicated to showing real stories and couples.
It’s not our main goal to get published when we start a wedding day, but we do try to make each of our couples feel like they could grace the cover of Martha Stewart. After this workshop was over, we left with so much inspiration for what we are capable of. We were able to work alongside some of the biggest names in the industry and couldn’t be more grateful. This was such a defining moment for our business, and we can’t thank Holly enough for the opportunity. We know this is only the beginning for us, and we can’t wait to see what comes from such an incredible experience.

We are also so excited to announce that we’re now booking destination weddings! We’ve talked a lot about what direction we’re heading with Ten23 Photography, and adding destination weddings kept coming up. Let’s talk about your wedding!
